Approximately 100 poolees from the four metro-Milwaukee recruiting substations put their Valentines Day love on hold as they headed to the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center to battle for respect and station pride in Recruiting Station Milwaukee’s annual metro-area field meet.
Recruiting Substation North Milwaukee was the returning champion and looked to maintain possession of the prized bronzed boot plaque.
“These events are great!” exclaimed Sgt. Maj. Wayne A. Hertz, the RS Milwaukee sergeant major. “The competitive spirit is built before they ever leave for boot camp.”
Scored events in this year’s field meet included a dizzy izzy relay, three-legged relay race, roman chair, fireman’s carry relay race, shuttle run relay race, pull ups for the males and flexed-arm hang for the females, crunches, and tug ‘o’ war.
Both the recruiters and poolees also played games of dodgeball after the scored events.
“You don’t go to boot camp and do the dizzy izzy,” said one of RSS Racine’s recruiters, Staff Sgt. Mark A. Vera. “You go to boot camp and do pull ups and crunches, and that’s where we dominated!”
RSS Racine’s domination of those events in addition to the flexed-arm hang helped them secure the top spot and the coveted bronze boot plaque over last year’s winner.
“I would rather have gotten blown away,” said Staff Sgt. Du’Shon Brown, RSS North Milwaukee’s staff noncommissioned officer in charge. “But to lose by only one point was heart breaking.”
