Sarah Conlon has been awarded a 4-year Naval ROTC scholarship to the University of Nebraska valued at up to $180,000 covering all tuition and fees, textbooks and an additional monthly stipend. She was chosen by a board of Military Officers as one of the 48 selectees from a pool of more than 650 qualified applicants a crossed the upper Midwest for the scholarship. During her next four years at Nebraska, Sarah will train to become an officer in the United States Marine Corps while earning a bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation, she will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and serve her country for at least four years.

Connie Cantrell, a Mason High School math teacher and swim coach, received the Marine Corps Recruiting Station Lansing Coach of the Year Award, May 20, 2016. Each year, RS Lansing honors coaches that exemplify the Marine Corps values of honor, courage and commitment, both in the arena of competition and within their communities. Cantrell has accumulated seven league championships, only lost one head-to-head meet in the past five years, and since beginning her coaching career in 2007 has amassed more than 105 wins. Her swim team concluded the 2016 season with an undefeated regular season and another Capital Area Activities Conference (CAAC) league championship.

Haley M. McKenna received the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship upon graduation from Big Rapids High School, May 9, 2016. More than 280 students in the upper mid-west region of the U.S. apply for this scholarship; 57 were awarded this year, 8 of which were from Michigan.

Ramarro D. Lamar, a student of Downers Grove South High School, earned the $180,000 NROTC Scholarship Award, May 3.

Lamar's teachers, peers, along with members of the community spoke highly of his remarkable character, incredible determination, and his genuine kindness. A few of his teachers even said “we wouldn’t be surprised if we are voting him for president one day.”

"Lamar embodies the core values we desire of our next generation of Marine Officers," said Sgt. Ramon Harris, Lamar's recruiter. "He definitely has what it takes."
