Phylicia Zarnosky, a native of Grand Rapids, MI, and 2008 graduate of Kenowa Hills High School, received a $150,000 scholarship from Capt. Paul Vanderwater, executive officer Recruiting Station Lansing, for her outstanding academics and leadership ability at the White Caps baseball game June 5, 2009. Out of over 230 applicants in the Midwest only 49 were awarded.
Each application included information on grade point averages, SAT scores, written essays, letters of recommendations, and the Marine Corps’ physical fitness test.
Zarnosky is the only one of 14 students in Michigan who earned and accepted the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship this year through the Marine Corps. She will receive up to $150,000 as part of a full four-year tuition accepted at more than one hundred-sixty colleges and universities, compensation for textbooks, fees and uniforms, a monthly subsistence allowance of up to $250, and an unparalleled level of experience.
Zarnosky will attend Eastern Michigan University this fall. Upon graduation and successful completion of the requirements, Zarnosky will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
