LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Five recruiters set the example for members of the Delayed Entry Program April 14 by volunteering to package meals for hungry families around the world.
Recruiting Substation Burnsville spent two hours at Evergreen Community Church's Kids Against Hunger packing session with four aspiring Marines to show that leadership starts at the top.
“It’s important we get involved in the community and show how much we care,” said Sgt. Joshua A. Draveling, 27, from Milwaukee. ”We wanted to bring more poolees, but there wasn’t enough room.”
Throughout the day, 165 volunteers helped package more than 67,000 meals.
“Everyone had a great time,” said Pat Massey, an 18-year-old senior from Rosemount High School who departs for boot camp June 18. “If I get another chance, I’ll gladly jump at the opportunity.”
Founded by Minnesota native Richard Proudfit, Kids Against Hunger has provided 200 million meals for children and their families in 60 countries.
“It’s wonderful the Marines came out to participate,” said event coordinator Elisia Meyer. “We look forward to working with them in the future.”

“I hope this inspires more Marines to step up to the plate and present a positive image,” Draveling said. “All too often the public only sees us as warriors, not humanitarians.”
