Recruiting Station St. Louis

Sergeant Major Spurling was born in LaPlata, Maryland in 1983. He enlisted in the Navy in March of 2002 and reported to Great
Lakes, Chicago Illinois for basic training. Upon completion of basic training he attended Master-at-arms A school at Lackland Air force
Base, San Antonio, TX. In October of 2002, he was assigned shore duty in Chinhae, Korea where he served as a Master-at- Arms for
the installation. In October 2003 he was transferred to Sewells Point Police Precinct in Norfolk, VA. While in Norfolk, he served as a
Patrolman, Seaward Sentry, Chief of the Guard, and Harbor Security Patrol. In May 2006, he got out of the Navy to pursue his
education.


In February 2008, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to 3rd Recruit Training Battalion in Paris Island, South Carolina. Upon
Completion of Recruit Training he was assigned to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, NC; after graduating MCT he was
transferred to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he attended his formal Military Occupation Specialty School Military Policemen
and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal.


In October of 2008, he was transferred to Military Police Company, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he
served as a Military Policemen, Squad Leader, and Platoon Sergeant. While assigned to Military Police Company, he deployed twice in
support of Operation Enduring Freedom first to Nowzad in 2009, and then LashKar Gah in 2011. While there, he excelled among his
peer group earning a meritorious promotion to Sergeant and receiving the Gung Ho award for his Inter Service Non-Lethal Weapons
Instructor Course.


Upon his return from LashKar Gah in 2012, he was then assigned to 2d Law Enforcement Battalion where he served as Squad Leader,
and Platoon Sergeant. In March 2013, Alpha Company, 2d Law Enforcement Battalion was deployed in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom. Serving as Platoon Sergeant, his platoon was serving at the Main Entry Point of Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan.
In May 2014, he was assigned to Military Police Instruction Company, Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Billets served while assigned to Military Police Instruction Company were Formal School Instructor, Active Shooter Response
Instructor, Team Chief, and Phase Chief. Earning both his Senior and Master Instructor certification. While at Fort Leonard Wood, he
applied and was selected to participate in the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Degree Completion Program.


In August 2016, he reported to Drury University, Springfield, Missouri as a full time student. Upon receiving his Bachelor's Degree in
Psychology, he received orders to the College of Enlisted Military Education, Training and Education Command, Quantico, Virginia.
While serving at the College of Enlisted Military Education, he was a Curriculum Developer, and Operations Chief for the Senior
Enlisted Academy.


In January 2021, he reported to Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan where he served as the Provost Sergeant. In
January 2022, Gunnery Sergeant Spurling was frocked to First Sergeant and reported to 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment where he
served as the Battery A First Sergeant and deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of Unit Deployment Program 23.2.
In April 2024, First Sergeant Spurling reported to Headquarters Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as the
Headquarters Company Senior Enlisted Leader.


Sergeant Major Spurling reported to Recruiting Station St. Louis in May 2025, where he currently serves at the Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Spurling holds a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters of Science in Executive Leadership. Sergeant Major Spurling's
personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award and Navy and Marine
Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award.


Sergeant Major Spurling is married to Rachel L. Spurling of Selinsgrove, PA and they have twin sons, Curtis and David.
