Major Benjamin W. Hummer was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. After completing Officer Candidate School in 2016, he graduated from Norwich University in 2017, earning a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. He reported to The Basic School in 2017. He graduated from the Basic Officer Course and Infantry Officer Course in 2018.
In 2018, Major Hummer reported to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Company A, Camp Pendleton, CA, holding the billet of Rifle Platoon Commander. He graduated Winter Mountain Leaders Course in February 2019, obtaining the MOS (0942). In 2019, he deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Battalion Landing Team 1/5. He was the independent Platoon Commander assigned with conducting live-fire squad and platoon supported attacks with the Royal Thai Marine Corps Platoon during Exercise Cobra Gold 20. He was assigned on the USS Green Bay and USS Germantown during 31st MEU patrol 20.1.
In 2020, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines deployed to the United States' Southwest Border Mission. He was assigned an independent area of operations of Wellton, Arizona. He was the Officer in Charge maintaining five observation posts in the area of operations, advising United States Customs and Border Patrol on migrants location and movement corridors.
From 2021-2023, Major Hummer was assigned to Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, holding the billets of Company Executive Officer, Unit Training Section Officer in Charge, and Formal Schools Officer in Charge. He completed Summer Mountain Leaders Course in July 2021, obtaining the MOS (0944) and the MOS (0946) as a qualified Summer and Winter Mountain Leader. From July to August 2023, he supported Exercise Southern Star 23 in Chile. His role during the exercise was to act as the senior Mountain Leader in support of 7th Special Forces Group, SEAL Team 10, and 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, as well as work along side Chilean Special Operation Forces exchanging tactics, techniques, and procedures for operating in a mountainous and extreme cold weather environment.
Major Hummer reported to Maneuver Captains Career Course in 2023 and graduated with honors in 2024. From 2024-2026, Major Hummer was assigned to 3d Littoral Combat Team, 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. He deployed in support of Exercise Balikatan 24 as the Assistant Operations Officer. Upon return from deployment he assumed command of Company B, 3d Littoral Combat Team in July 2024. During that period he executed Service Level Training Exercise-Hawaii 2025 and deployed his company in support of Littoral Rotational Force-Luzon 25. Upon return from deployment he relinquished command of Company B, and assumed command of Headquarters and Service Company in July 2025. Executing Service Level Training Exercise-Hawaii 2026 and deployed his company in support of Littoral Rotational Force-Luzon 26.
Major Hummer assumed command of Recruiting Station Salt Lake City in June 2026.
Major Hummer is a graduate of Maneuver Captain's Career Course at Fort Benning, GA, Advanced Maneuver Warfare Course at Twentynine Palms, CA, and Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
