In the annual MN Armed Forces hockey tournament, the Marine Corps put together their own team, for the first time in MN History. The Marines were primarily from Marine Wing Support Squadron 471, but retired Marines and corpsmen also played for the team including , 75-year-old Marine Veteran John Swanberg. The Majority of the Marines had not played hockey before, but managed to win one match and tie another. "Marines and Sailors are already part of a tightknit group," said Major Richard Wilson, one of the Marine players. "Having the opportunity to work together as a team in a sport which was relatively new for many of us made us that much tighter."

Hawkins, Naval Station Great Lakes commanding officer, cut the ribbon to officially open the 9th Marine Corps District headquarters building during a ribbon cutting ceremony aboard the Naval Station, Sept. 1, 2015. The ceremony also commemorated the 78th anniversary of the unit's activation as 9th Reserve District, which was established aboard the Naval Station, Sept. 1, 1937. Col. Jason Morris, the District's commanding officer, spoke during the ceremony about the importance of recruiting and how maintaining a well-qualified, well-trained Marine Corps begins with the individual recruiter on the streets. The District is responsible for recruiting enlisted, officer and prior service Marines across 660,000 square miles and 13 states in the Midwest region.
